Vatera formation PDF Print E-mail

Vatera formation is located between Cape of Ag. Fokas and Vatera beach.
It is consisting of a thick succession of Upper Miocene-Early Pleistocene deposits . Two different depositional environments were recognized: a lacustrine to brackish environment in the lower part and an alluvial fan system in the upper part.

The lacustrine deposits are composed of greenish marls, marly limestones and diatomites which contain ostracodes , plant remains (pollen, spores) and fishes.

Many animals lived and died in these environments. The alluvial deposits contain a fauna whose composition indicates that Lesvos must have been a part of the mainland and that it contains Asiatic and European elements.
